Gishora drum sanctuary is located on a peaceful hill, about 7km from Gitega, the second largest city and cultural heart of Burundi. The cultural site was founded by King Mwezi IV Gisabo as a sacred place for preserving and honoring the legendary royal drums of Burundi. These drums were only played in the presence of Kings in the past. However, as time went on, these royal drums became an instrument of celebration and honor.

What to do at the Sanctuary:

1. Enjoy the Royal Drum Performances and dive straight into Burundi’s heritage. These performances are full of life. 

2. The Sacred Drum House:

The sacred house, locally known as the “Inkiranya” is where the royal drums are protected and honored.

3. Guided Cultural Tours: Upon your arrival at the sanctuary, a guide will welcome you and lead your tour around the cultural site. These guided tours are available in English, French and Kirundi. The natural environment will calm your soul and also give you great relaxation, away from the noisy city life.

The sanctuary will not only help you to connect with nature but also to enjoy a cultural encounter and collect hundreds of memories.
