This 160-km2 national park protects the Rwandan portion of the Virunga Mountains. It includes a range of 6 extinct and 2 active volcanoes that straddle the Border with Uganda and the DRC.

The bamboo forest is scattered with alpine moorland, grassland, and marshland. In this national park, there are 12 habituated gorilla families.

Volcanoes National Park is one of the last remaining sanctuaries for the mountain gorilla.

No more than eight people per day can visit any one habituated family, and visits are strictly controlled to reduce the likelihood of disturbance or disease transmission to the gorillas.

Gorilla trekking in the dense forest can sometimes be wet, muddy, and uncomfortable. The landscape is by no means easy either, so it can be a bit difficult and often humid, but the sheer adventure in encountering a habituated gorilla family dominated by a great silverback male, more than outweighs and difficulty.

You need to be well prepared and fairly fit to hike for up to 4 hours, uphill and downhill, as it may take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours to reach your designated gorilla family.

The trackers have already set out and located the mountain gorilla family by the time you begin your trek, so your actual hiking time can typically be predicted when you start.

You can get very close to the mountain gorillas, which are calm and gentle, and watching their movements is like seeing a mirror image of yourself.

Your visit with the gorillas will last one memorable hour. Since lunch can only be taken upon return to your lodge, it’s recommended that you bring some energy-boosting snacks to keep you fueled throughout the morning.
