Overview
Experience the best of the Democratic Republic of Congo with the 4-Day Congo Gorilla Tour and Nyiragongo Hiking Package. This meticulously planned safari is perfect for adventurers who want to hike Mount Nyiragongo and embark on a thrilling gorilla trekking expedition in Congo’s magnificent Virunga National Park.
Exploring Virunga National Park
Virunga National Park, Africa’s oldest national park, was established in 1925. This vast and vital sanctuary once encompassed Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and parts of Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Consequently, Virunga boasts a rich biodiversity and an untouched natural landscape. Furthermore, it shelters several of Africa’s most celebrated species and primates. For instance, visitors have the rare opportunity to spot the unique okapi, mountain gorillas, and various chimpanzee populations. The park’s main draws, however, remain the unforgettable mountain gorilla encounters and the challenging yet rewarding Mount Nyiragongo hike.
The Nyiragongo Volcano: See Boiling Lava
Mount Nyiragongo stands out among Africa’s volcanoes. Crucially, it is the only one on the continent where tourists can pay to get an up-close look at its mesmerizing, boiling lava lake.
Complimentary Kigali City Tour
Additionally, this incredible package includes a fascinating Kigali city tour. This trip allows you to explore the vibrant Rwandan capital, featuring stops at the solemn Genocide War Memorial Centre, the former presidential palace (now a museum), bustling city markets, and charming artisan stores.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival In Kigali & Transfer To Congo
Your safari begins immediately as your guide greets you at Kigali International Airport or your accommodation for a brief but essential pre-safari meeting. Following the briefing, you’ll dive straight into the captivating Kigali City Tour.
Exploring Kigali: History and Culture
First, you’ll visit the profound Gisozi Genocide Memorial Centre. Here, you’ll gain a deep understanding of the 1994 genocide and its pivotal role in transforming the nation. Expect to see poignant short films and hear moving accounts from survivors of those tragic events.
Afterward, the tour continues to explore Kigali’s vibrant core. You’ll browse the major city market, shop at artisan stores, and visit the former presidential palace—once used by President Habyarimana before the plane crash that triggered the massacre.
Journey to the Congo Border
Following the city tour, you’ll enjoy lunch before beginning the journey toward the Congo border. Upon arrival, you’ll proceed to the immigration office to present all required documentation, including your passport and Yellow Fever vaccination card.
Please note: Crossing the Rwanda-Congo border may take some time. Crucially, your tour guide will not accompany you across the border. Instead, an official Virunga National Park staff member will be waiting on the opposite side to meet you and transport you directly to your accommodation in Goma city, Congo.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Congo
Get ready for an unforgettable day! You’ll wake up early, eat breakfast, and pack a lunch while you await the arrival of the Virunga National Park crew.
First, the park staff will drive you to the headquarters for an essential briefing. Congo’s Virunga National Park is home to eight habituated gorilla families. Park officials strategically distribute visitors among these groups, primarily basing the assignment on your age and general fitness. However, they may also consider your personal preferences when allocating groups.
Gorilla trekking involves a challenging but rewarding hike, as you trek through dense forest before finally locating a gorilla family. The search for the gorillas typically takes between one to two hours. Once you successfully locate them, you have a strict and precious one hour to observe, photograph, and video these incredible primates.
During the hikes—both to and from the family—be sure to keep an eye out for other wildlife! You can expect to spot smaller primates, unique birds, forest creatures, and even chimpanzees.
After this incredible experience, you’ll hike back to the park headquarters, which can take another one to two hours. Finally, you’ll head back to your lodge for well-deserved refreshments and a restful evening.
Day 3: Nyiragongo Hike
Your final major adventure starts with an early breakfast. The Virunga team picks you up and transfers you to Kibatsi village, the official starting point for your Mount Nyiragongo ascent. This challenging yet rewarding hike typically takes 4 to 6 hours, depending on the group’s fitness level, and rest assured, no one gets left behind until you reach the summit.
Upon conquering the peak, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view that sweeps across Goma town, Virunga National Park, Lake Kivu, the towering Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda, and even includes glimpses of the other Virunga volcanoes and distant national parks like Kahuzi Biega. Following this spectacular daytime view, you’ll prepare for the night’s main event: observing the mesmerizing boiling lava lake. Since the lava’s glow is most intense after dark, you will spend time studying the volcano at night before a local chef and porter serve a hearty dinner right on the summit. Finally, you’ll spend the night sleeping high atop the volcano, completing this thrilling experience.
Day 4: Descent Nyirangongo & Departure
The final segment of your adventure begins with the descent of Mount Nyiragongo starting promptly at 8:00 a.m. This morning timing is perfect, allowing you to enjoy uninterrupted views of Virunga National Park and the spectacular sights you glimpsed the day before.
Consequently, you should arrive in Goma before midday and proceed directly to the border crossing point. Here, you will reunite with your original safari guide and immediately begin the scenic drive back to Kigali. Finally, your guide will ensure a seamless transfer, dropping you off at your hotel or the airport for your departure flight.
