Day 1: Arrival Kigali Airport
Start your Rwanda Birding Safari! Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, our tour guide welcomes you and provides a private transfer to your hotel.
If time allows, we proceed with an introductory Kigali city tour. This immersion into the history and culture of “the country of a thousand hills” includes a vital visit to the powerful Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre. Overnight stay in Kigali.
Day 2: Bird Watching at Nyabarongo and Nyarutarama
Following your initial city immersion, we rise early for our first dedicated birding session. Our focus is the important Nyabarongo River Wetlands. This early start ensures the best views of shy species.
Afterwards, we return for lunch before proceeding to our afternoon location. Subsequently, we engage in another productive bird watching activity at the Nyarutarama artificial lake in Kigali. This site provides easy access to waterbirds, making it a perfect second stop before concluding the day.

Day 3: Game Drive in the Akagera National park
Following breakfast, we transfer to the Eastern part of Rwanda to reach Akagera National Park, the country’s vast savannah and wetland reserve.
The birding starts immediately upon entry! The initial drive cuts through the prime acacia and papyrus habitats. Key sightings expected include the rare Red-faced Barbet, Papyrus Gonolek, Bennett’s Woodpecker, and Tabora Cisticola.

Day 4: Game Drive in the Akagera National Park and Back to Kigali
Morning Game Drive & North Exit
We start the day with an invigorating breakfast before embarking on a full-day game drive through the classic savannah landscape of Akagera National Park.
This safari route traverses the park from the Akagera Game Lodge area all the way to the Northern Gate exit. This is your prime opportunity to find the iconic Big Five (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino).
Mammal Diversity: Be on the lookout for large herds of Buffalo and Elephant, the towering Masai Giraffe, the sleek Zebra, and over a dozen species of Antelope. Keep a keen eye out for the re-introduced Lion and the shy Leopard.
Birds: Enjoy the abundant grassland birdlife as you move through the diverse habitats towards the north.
Day 5: Bugesera and Departure
After a reflective morning, we return to the capital for lunch and a fascinating glimpse into modern Rwandan life.
Lunch: A delicious mid-day meal (L) is included.
Kigali City Tour: Depending on your international flight schedule, enjoy a final tour of Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest and safest cities. Highlights often include:
- Vibrant local markets (e.g., Kimironko).
- The Presidential Museum (former State House).
- Artisan craft centers (e.g., Caplaki) for unique souvenirs.
- The city’s spectacular viewpoints.

Departure: Transfer to Kigali International Airport (KGL) for your onward flight.
