Overview

Kibale Forest National Park, located in southwestern Uganda. The park stands as one of Africa’s premier safari destinations and the continent’s highest concentration of chimpanzees. Indeed, this attractive, top destination is often referred to as the “Primate Capital of the World” due to its incredible biodiversity.

Spanning 795 square kilometers of tropical rainforest, swamps, rivers, and small grasslands. Kibale protects approximately 1,500 chimpanzees. In addition to the highest number and diversity of primates in East Africa—a remarkable 13 species. Among these are the world’s threatened red colobus and the rare L’Hoest’s monkeys, along with red-tailed monkeys, olive baboons, and grey-cheeked mangabeys.

Consequently, chimpanzee tracking remains the main highlight. However, only individuals aged 15 and above participate in tracking, while younger children enjoy other educational forest walks. Beyond the primates, the park features over 375 bird species and around 70 species of mammals, which make a visit to Kibale truly worthwhile.

This 3-day Uganda Chimpanzee safari takes you directly to Kibale Forest National Park, recognized as one of Africa’s premier rainforests. Located in Western Uganda, approximately 300 kilometers from Kampala. This park shelters an incredible 13 primate species, including the highly sought-after Chimpanzees, who share close human DNA. Furthermore, the park’s biodiversity extends to 70 species of mammals and over 375 bird species. Throughout your visit, the main activities will center on exciting Chimpanzee trekking through the dense forest, along with an immersive Bigodi wetland walk.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer To Kibale National Park

Begin your safari bright and early: you wake up, have breakfast, and meet your driver/guide for a brief safari overview. Immediately following the briefing, you start your drive to the western part of Uganda, destined for Kibale National Park.

En route, you take a pleasant stopover in Fort Portal for lunch. Afterward, you can opt to visit the scenic tea plantations or the beautiful Toro crater lakes. Subsequently, you proceed to the park and check in to your chosen lodge. During the evening, you may choose an optional nature walk in the forest, where you might spot various wildlife species. Finally, you enjoy dinner and settle in for the night, eagerly preparing for the main chimpanzee trekking experience the next day.

Day 2: Chimp Trekking & Bigodi Wetland Walk

Following your morning breakfast. Your driver transports you to the park information center, where you and other guests receive a thorough briefing on proper chimpanzee trekking etiquette. Subsequently, you set out into the forest to search for the chimpanzees and experience an unforgettable encounter. Trekking may take 2 to 6 hours, depending on the primates’ location. While you trek, you will spot various birds, different monkey species—such as black-and-white colobus and grey-cheeked mangabey—and numerous unique tree species.

After this amazing time with the chimpanzees, you return to the lodge for lunch. Thereafter, your guide drives you to the Bigodi Wetland for an immersive swamp walk. During this walk, you will observe more primates, including red-tailed monkeys and L’Hoest’s monkeys, along with other wildlife like baboons, bush pigs, and otters. Furthermore, bird enthusiasts will delight in sighting species like the magnificent Great Blue Turaco.

In addition, you will meet local community members and schoolchildren, gaining a valuable African experience as you observe their daily lives and activities. Finally, you head back to the lodge for dinner and overnight rest.

Day 3: Drive To Kampala

Mark the end of this amazing 3-day safari by enjoying your final breakfast at the lodge. Immediately following your meal, you begin the journey back to Kampala, taking a packed lunch from the lodge for your convenience. Finally, you arrive in Kampala in the evening, concluding your primate adventure.
