Day 2: Transfer To Jinja
Upon your arrival at Entebbe International Airport, a friendly Kagera Safaris guide will immediately welcome you.
First, your guide will provide a comprehensive briefing about the exciting safari you are about to begin. Next, we will promptly transfer you to your comfortable hotel, where you will settle in for your overnight stay. Thus, your incredible Uganda journey starts immediately upon landing.
Day 3-4: Cultural experience
Get ready to immerse yourselves in the rich Sabiny culture and community on the slopes of Mt. Elgon.
First, we will visit the remarkable Sipi Widows Group, the very source of Uganda’s finest washed Arabica Coffee. The women of this group actively guide you through their coffee plantation, demonstrating the entire process: how they plant, pick, grind, store, and finally wash the coffee beans.
Furthermore, you will have the chance to learn firsthand about the Sabiny people. You can participate in traditional weaving, prepare, cook, and taste authentic African cuisine and local dishes, and browse the women’s vibrant handicraft shop. Importantly, the proceeds from both the tour and the shop directly support the maintenance of the coffee trees, fund school fees, and raise awareness about the dangers of female circumcision—a practice traditionally common in this region.
Finally, we will hike to the magnificent Sipi Falls, where you will capture breathtaking views of the cascading waterfalls.
Day 5: Hike to Piswa camp
After you enjoy a hearty breakfast, we will swiftly transfer you to Kapkwata (at 2,190 meters), where you will begin your ascent of Mt. Elgon.
This route is incredibly scenic, weaving through distinct zones of bamboo forest, heathland, and moorland. Consequently, you will have ample opportunity to enjoy the changing vegetation as you steadily climb toward Piswa Camp (2,850 meters). Fortunately, today’s hike maintains a gentle gradient, ensuring you can truly savour the beautiful landscape.
Day 6: Hunter’s cave camp in Mt Elgon
Today, you will hike up to the magnificent caldera rim, passing directly through stunning natural columns.
This section actively showcases rare and endemic plant species, such as the towering giant Lobelia Elgonensis. Indeed, you are trekking through unique vegetation found only at this altitude in Uganda. Be sure to look out for the beautiful wild Everlasting flowers along the way.
Furthermore, your route takes you right past the hot springs, which make an excellent stopover for rest and photos. On the very same trail, you will discover the dramatic Suam Gorge, offering spectacular views of the mountain. Finally, after passing the gorge, you will complete the last leg of the day’s journey, arriving at Hunters Cave Camp at 3,850 meters.
Day 7: Overnight at Mude cave camp
Today’s ultimate goal is to conquer the Wagagai Peak at 4,321 meters, the highest point on Mt. Elgon!
Truly, the panoramic views from the massive caldera—the largest in the world—make the challenging ascent entirely worthwhile. Furthermore, you will stand on the fourth-highest peak in all of Africa.
Thereafter, we will descend toward our overnight stop. This route takes you past the Jackson Summit (4,200 meters) and the beautiful Jackson Pool. Finally, we will arrive and settle into the Mude Cave Camp at 3,500 meters for a well-earned rest.
Day 8: Desend Through the sasa trail
After an early breakfast, we begin the thrilling descent via the Sasa Trail to Budadiri, ensuring you experience a new route of the mountain. Upon arrival, your driver will meet you and promptly transfer you back to Kampala. We will make a convenient stop in Mbale for lunch before concluding your journey in the city.
Day 9: End of Mt Elgon Hike
Enjoy a restful morning after your climb to Uganda’s second-highest peak. Subsequently, we will transfer you to the airport to begin your journey back home. Thank you for exploring the Pearl of Africa with us; we eagerly await planning your next Uganda adventure.
